Living the student life has never been tougher in today's economic climate, but there are ways to become financially secure
Everybody always says that being a student is easy - non-stop partying, a couple of hours of lectures a week and none of the worries of the real world. But there is one thing that is the bane of every student's life: money. Money has always been tight for students but in the current economic climate with tuition fees set higher than ever before it is even worse, but this doesn't mean that you can't live the way you want to. The internet is packed full of voucher codes and discount sites that allow you to enjoy yourself without breaking the bank. With offers on everything from toothpaste to white water rafting, you're sure to find something to suit you.
London is the most expensive city in the UK to live in and so London deals are arguably more important to students here than anywhere else. Luckily, however, London also has the offers to match. If you're bored of eating baked beans for every meal then a quick Google search will find lots of offers for restaurants in London with free courses as well as up to 50% off your final bill. You may think that you don't have enough money to do this but a great tip to stay financially secure is planning. Work out exactly how much money you have and how much you will have each week, after rent and bills and as long as you stick to your plan you may find that you end up with a little extra each week that will allow you to treat yourself.
If you're concerned with keeping fit as a student but think that you won't be able to afford the gym, think again. If the University's gym isn't convenient for you there are loads of deals available for discount memberships and a lot of places will do you a deal on the cost if you say that you're a student. There are also lots of Nottingham deals for students on activities to help you enjoy yourself, such as bowling and cinema tickets. If you don't know about Orange Wednesday you really should - Orange customers get two for the price of one on cinema tickets every Wednesday, with almost all cinemas in the UK participating. So if you're not on Orange then make sure you quickly make friends with someone who is!
There are lots of Essex deals available to students with everything from cookery classes to boiler inspections (but don't worry your landlord will have that sorted!) If you can't cook then you should seriously think about learning, as cooking for yourself rather than buying ready meals or takeaways all the time will save you hundreds of pounds a year. I know a kebab is irresistible after a night out but for every other meal it will be cheaper, and much healthier, to cook from scratch with fresh ingredients. Why not pitch in with your housemates to further spread the cost and the workload?
Staying financially secure is a struggle for students all over the UK but if you plan ahead and look out for every deal you can then money should be one weight off your mind.
