Minimise the Likelihood of Experiencing a Fly Infestation

An infestation of flies in the home can be hugely stressful experience, and getting rid of them as quickly as possible is high on the list of priorities of anyone who has suffered for this before! Getting a fly infestation under control can be hard, so it's much better to prevent a fly problem occurring before it gets out of hand.

Having a fly control problem can raise health issues, as flies can carry diseases which can make humans ill - one such illness which can be transmitted is intestinal worms. Some fly infestations can also include horse flies or sand flies - both of which are known to cause angry bites to people and animals. If you cook for your family, it's especially important to ensure that flies have no access to food.

A fly infestation occurs when flies find somewhere suitable to breed and a number of them hatch and breed again. Like any pest infestation, the longer a fly control problem continues, the harder it will be to eradicate, so it's best to act quickly. If you have found a number of flies within your home, use a spray killer in the most infested area to ensure the flies do not breed, and use a powder poison on any maggots or larvae.

Leftover, uncovered food is a great attraction to flies, so one of the best ways to ensure that you don't end up with a fly issue is by always throwing out or securely protecting any food which isn't immediately eaten. Sweet foods, including soft fruit, warm meat and sticky treats all particularly attract flies, so ensure that these items aren't left uncovered.

Bins and compost heaps are another common breeding ground for flies. When it comes to garbage, make sure that your bin bags are tightly tied and placed in a bin which closes securely so that no insects can enter. If you have a compost heap, always make sure there is enough dry matter in the mix and turn it regularly - this will discourage flies from laying eggs within your compost.

You can minimise the chance of experience a fly infestation by keeping rubbish tied up, compost heaps fairly dry and ensuring all food is kept covered. If you do find lots of flies or maggots, always use a spray or powder poison as quickly as possible in order to keep your family safe and healthy!
