One of the biggest events of its kind in Fermanagh promoting renewable energy for the farm and rural areas, will be hosted by Enniskillen Campus of CAFRE next Wednesday.
The "Practical On-farm Renewable Energy" event on February 22, aims to provide practical information for farmers and the rural sector about the various options available to them. It runs from 1.30pm to 10pm. It follows from a very successful event at Greenmount Campus last November.
One aspect of the day will be a trade exhibition where around 30 companies will be displaying their renewable energy products. These will include examples of the main technologies that can be used on the farm.
The programme for the day includes a wide range of seminars relating to both specific technologies and the associated challenges in their adoption.
Many will no doubt be interested in the first hand experiences of farmers such as Eoin McCambridge with his micro-hydro plant, John Best on a biomass boiler installation at the family farm and Jim Torney, who will talk on the construction and commissioning of the biogas plant at Blakiston Houston Estates in Dundonald. Many of the seminars are repeated in the evening so thos visiting can select what they want to attend and when.
Further examples of this include Peter Hutchinson from DETI who will discuss the proposed Renewable Heat Incentive, Trevor Finlay who will deal with financing major projects and Anne Douglas giving advice on taxation.
Other speakers from DARD, the Agri-Food and Bio-Sciences Institute and CAFRE will be taking part.
At every half hour from 2.30pm, technology seminars will be held, starting with energy efficiency presented by David Trimble, followed by biomass production and utilisation by Lindsay Easson, A. McCracken and John Best; anaerobic digestion plants at 3.30 and 4pm by Nigel Moore and J.Torney; wind power at 4.30pm by A. Watts; micro-hydro generation by Eoin McCambridge; Solar hot water by D.Trimble and at 6pm, an outline of the role of heat pumps by G. O'Sullivan.
Starting at 6.30pm, there are seminars on solar PV by G. Forbes and a repeat of earlier presentions with biomass production and utilisation at 7pm followed by anaerobic digestion plants at 8pm and wind power at 9pm.
A series of talks on funding, grid connections, planning, taxation and ROCs are also given throughout the day.
Throughout the day, there will be an opportunity to view the biomass boiler installation and fuel delivery system at the Enniskillen Campus which is supplying over 90 per cent of the heating needs of the premises.
