The scene after accident in Belturbet.

A lorry driver is in a serious condition in Cavan General Hospital after he was injured in what is thought to have been a freak accident on the Dublin road yesterday (Wednesday).

The man, who is believed to be a foreign national, was driving an articulated lorry when he pulled over to the side of the Cavan Road just outside Belturbet.

Unconfirmed reports suggest he got out of his cab and got underneath to look at something. As he was doing so the lorry moved forward and ran over his legs. The vehicle then continued on in the direction of houses but came to a halt following a minor collision. The driver was taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital with serious leg injuries.

Speaking to The Impartial Reporter, one resident living close to the scene of the accident, said: "This is a big shock, I hope he'll be all right".
