An army bomb disposal team has dealt with a "viable device" found in a field on the Drumroosk Road at Kinawley on Thursday.

The Drumroosk Road was closed during the clearance operation and has now been re-opened.

Police say several items have been taken away for forensic examination.

They do not believe the bomb was linked to dissident republican activity. It may have been an old Provisional IRA device and been in the field for many years.

Superintendent Simon Walls said: "The police operation, which started on Thursday evening, required a careful and controlled response putting public safety to the forefront. We are investigating the likelihood that this device may have been here for some considerable time, possibly many years.

"Although any disruption to local people was minimal we would wish to thank them for their patience and understanding," he said.

Superintendent Walls appealed for anyone who may have information about the incident to contact police in Enniskillen by calling 0845 600 8000. Alternatively information can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
