Free tour of the Universe
A volcano will erupt in Fermanagh this weekend. And a meteorite land in the county.
It is not the end of the world but the start of a fascinating free tour of the universe.
About all that will be missing from the Cosmic Cuilcagh show at the Marble Arch Visitor Centre on Saturday and Sunday will be a visit by ET!
The Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark is once again teaming up with the Armagh Planetarium to offer a weekend of astronomical activities and super star-gazing.
Celebrating the wonders of the universe, Cosmic Cuilcagh includes a range of exciting activities helping us to appreciate our place in the cosmos and to unravel some of the mysteries of our planet. One of the main attractions will be the Stardome, Ireland's leading portable planetarium, offering children and adults a unique and exciting way to learn about their place in the universe and the possibilities of space travel. Other activities will include the chance touch a meteorite, make a fossil and create a volcanic eruption. The Irish Astronomical Association will also be on hand to explain the night sky with evening star-gazing walks on offer (weather permitting), with the chance to view the fabulously clear heavens of west Fermanagh.
Geopark geologist, Dr. Kirstin Lemon, explained: "Now more than ever, we are seeing an unprecedented interest in all things astronomical. Television programmes such as BBC Stargazing Live and science celebrities such as Professor Brian Cox have all added to the thirst for knowledge in this area. Cosmic Cuilcagh hopes to provide a more local focus for such an upsurge in interest and will provide the opportunity to not only find out a bit more about the wonders of the night sky, but also in how this can link in to the ground beneath our feet."
This event is suitable for the entire family, is sponsored by the Armagh Planitarium and is completely free. Visits to the Stardome will take place at 11am, 12 noon, 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.
No booking is necessary but if you would like further information please contact the Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre at +44 (0) 28 6634 8855.
