Spat at police and tried to head-butt officer
A 23-year-old man who spat at police and tried to head-butt an officer has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment, suspended for two years.
Anthony Leonard appeared at Fermanagh Court and admitted assaulting and resisting a police officer, smashing a window belonging to Damien Wiggins and being disorderly.
He was ordered to pay £50 compensation to the owner of the window.
A prosecutor told the court that around 4am on Tuesday, October 18, last year, police were called to Trasna Way in Lisnaskea in relation to a report of criminal damage. The injured party told them he had seen Leonard smash his window. Leonard was in the kitchen in a highly intoxicated state. He was taken outside where he began shouting very loudly and abusing police. He was arrested and attempted to head-butt an officer. He also tried to spit on the officer and his colleagues but without success.
Defence solicitor, Mr. Michael Fahy, said Leonard, from Shandon Park, Omagh, had an unedifying criminal record peppered with periods in custody. He had spend the equivalent of seven weeks in prison awaiting trial for this offence.
Mr. Fahy submitted that Leonard had shown a very definite change in attitude and hadn't re-offended since being granted bail last October, which was unusual for him as he had previously re-offended when released from custody.
