Noble opens season with a fifth place in Barbados
Gavin Noble finished fifth in the Bridgetown ITU Sprint Triathlon Pan American Cup in Barbados.
Enniskillen's Gavin Noble got is season off to a fine start as he came home in fifth spot in Sunday's Bridgetown ITU Sprint Triathlon Pan American Cup in Barbados.
The triathlete has recently finished his winter training and was targeting a top ten finish so to have claimed fifth place in a high quality field will have delighted him.
2007 ITU World Champion, Daniel Unger announced his return to triathlon competition and his Olympic qualification intentions with a bang when he staved off all comers to win the race but Noble remained to the fore for the entire day exiting the swim in sixth, biking with the lead pack before finishing with a 15:45 5km run.
Unger crossed the line first in 55:34 minutes with Costa Rica's Leonardo Chacon second in 55:37 and Manuel Huerta of the United States third in 55:39. Noble in fifth place was just 18 seconds off the leader showing the small margins and competitive nature of the sport.
The Fermanagh man's first major race in this Olympic year is the World Triathlon Series in Sydney and Noble with he will now turn his attention to sharpening his speed in order to be in top condition.
